DIE FLEDERMAUS AT THE MET

DIZZY, DELICIOUS, DAZZLING HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT

By Lori Simmons Zelenko

Dizzy merriment ensues at the Metropolitan Opera as the curtains open on Johann Strauss’ comic operetta Die Fledermaus.

Set in 1899 Vienna, fin de siècle glamour pervades the production from the glossy red walls of the drawing room decorated with larger than life Gustav Klimt-like paintings to the Art Nouveau hinting at Art Deco black and gold ensembles of the New Year’s Eve entertainment, saucy, sexy chorus girls.

It’s all over the top glamour with wild and wonderful magical mix-ups of mistaken identity and mysterious partners in love. The music bubbles along inviting you to waltz away into a world where what is – is not quite what it appears to be. Swooning ladies, naughty chambermaids, dazzling duchesses, handsome swains all out celebrating and mischief-making as the century turns. Grand fun with a wicked sense of humor. A MUST for Holiday celebration. You will leave dancing on air, laughing, smiling at the joyous antics on stage and thinking to yourself, a masquerade ball just might be the ticket this New Year’s Eve.

Performances continue at the Metropolitan Opera through January 7, 2016. Sung in English this tale of bored housewives spicing up their marriage, chambermaids stepping out on the town and philandering husbands seduced by mysterious beauties froths over like a bottle of fine champagne. The plot has intricacies layered like a Viennese torte and the characters’ machinations are a delight to watch unfold in this visually stunning, musically superb production incomparably conducted by James Levine, Music Director at The Metropolitan Opera.
